Opening yourself up to new opportunities can be hard. But if you’ve been doing things the same way for a while and feel like it’s time for a change, don’t be afraid to take those first steps into exploring something new. Here I am going to share some suggestions to help you get out of your own way so you can be open to any opportunity that comes along. No matter if you want to change something in your professional or personal life, these suggestions are a good way to start.
Get Out of Your Head
Sometimes we hold ourselves back just by overthinking things or making assumptions. When this happens, it can be hard to make a decision about our situation and move forward. However, if you know you’ve done your due diligence and have looked into every option you have, don’t question yourself. You know what will be best for you, so take a moment to center yourself and get out of your head..
Be Open-Minded
Being open-minded does not mean you have to accept everything you are told at face value. However, you should do your best to listen to what you’re being told and consider it before rejecting it.
If your natural tendency is to automatically reject anything that doesn’t align with what you believe, take a minute to pause before you do so. Consider what the other person is telling you and think about what it would be like to be in their shoes.
Ask questions for clarity if you need to. You might just surprise yourself and learn something new or figure out a different way to approach a situation. The possibilities are endless when you can be more open-minded.
Get Out of Your Comfort Zone
It’s easy to get into a routine–after all, routines are comforting, they help us get things done and keep us on track and organized. But it’s good to step away from routines every so often and shake things up a bit. You’ll never know what good things can come your way if you never try anything new.
Challenge Your Beliefs About What You Can Do
You can do anything you put your mind to. Think about the last thing you accomplished that you thought was too hard or impossible. What changed your thought process? What was it that made you realize you could indeed reach your goal?
If you’re facing something you think is absolutely impossible, it’s ok to take a step back—but don’t give up. Take the time you need to collect your thoughts and clear your mind, then come back. Remind yourself of all of the “impossible” things you’ve managed to do in the past and have the confidence to know that if you could do that, you can do so much more.
No matter what you have going on in your life, it’s a good idea to keep yourself open to new and different opportunities. You never know what they may lead to. Hopefully, some of these tips can help you develop a more open mindset.
